Sri Mahaswami of Kanch Kamakoti Peetam, while he was alive desired to bring out a very grand souvenir in connection with the Diamond jubilee of Advaita Sabha. One of the topics that His Holiness had in mind was, “Traces of Advaita in English literature”. Among the professor of English who were invited to write on this subject was a retired professor of the Presidency College of Madras. When his Holiness asked this professor about traces of Advaita, he referred some lines from Shakespeare’s ‘ As you like it’ and Wordsworth’s “Tin tern Abbey” . Then His Holiness enquired the professor if there was much clearer information in any of Shelly’s poems. The professor could not recall to memory any such reference.
Some minutes passed on. The Acharya asked, “Have you not read Shelly’s ‘Adonais’ ?” The professor replied, “Yes I have read Adonais and also taught the poems to students”. The Swami observed, “Have you forgotten the line”
“The one remains, the many change and pass?” The professor submitted that because of age his memory was very weak and after performing obeisance, took leave of His Holiness.
Jaya Jaya Sankara! Hara Hara Sankara!!
