Ramayana is one of the Great epic of India. It describes in glorious terms the hero’s deeds and virtue of Kshatriya Princes The Ramayana is the story of Rama a prince of King Dasaratha of Ayodhya. By an unfortunate promise, given to Kaikeye the wife of Dasaratha, Dasaratha is compelled to send Rama to the forest for fourteen years. Rama being a devoted son and respecting the honour of his fathers word accepts the order and proceeds to Dandakaranya [Deep forest] . With his wife Seetha and brother Lakshmana. There he fights the demons who are destroying the sacrifice and penance of the sages. Ravana , the demon king of Lanka, took away Seetha by deceit. Being informed about this Jatayu, the two brothers proceed to the south. On the way they secure the help of Sugriva and Hanuman. Ultimately they have reached Lanka thro’ the bridge constructed by them and succeeds in killing Ravana and getting back Seetha. They fly back to Ayodhya. Rama ascends the throne which is kept vacant by Bharata –another faithful step brother of Rama. After some time Rama has to abandon Seetha just to please a section of his people. This incident of banishing the devoted and faithful wife against his own will is described in a touching manner in Ramayana. Seetha however for virtue of her purity and extraordinary ability of her two sons Lava and Kucha, wins back her husband’s confidence.
The Ramayana is the story of the triumph of the good over the evil. A Picture of the society of those times was clearly told in Ramayana. The King was the central figure, morals, religion, welfare and everything else depended upon his character and behaviour. Swati Tirunal of Trivancore summarized the Ramayana in a series of verses starting with “Bhavayaami Raghuramam". These verses were popularised by the great carnatic singer Bharatha Rathna Smt. M.S.
