Mahabharata and Sri Krishna.
There are two Grand Indian epics named Ramayana and Mahabharata. They are respected as sacred works. It is difficult to define the epic age. They tell us a lot about the Indian society and the people as those of the ancient world. The Mahabharata is traditionally ascribed to ‘Vyasa’ who is the founder of Vedas.
The Mahabharata is the story of Kurus and the Pandavas. The main theme of the epic is the Great War between them. The Kurus or Kauravas defeat the five pandavas in gambling and compel them to dwell in the forests for 12years and another year in exile. The Pandavas claim their share of the empire after this period but the kauravas deny it.
Duryodhana the eldest of Kauravas said, the pandavas have already lived in forest for thirteen years, let them go again to the forest and spend the rest of the life. If they are insisting for the kingdom then they must win it by sword and they will get it only at my death. The pandavas not only had the right to the kingdom, but also had a duty that justice was done. Hence both assembled at the battlefield of Kuruksetra along with Kings from all part of India participate on one side or the other. Pandavas with the help of Shri Krishna come out successful and establish their Right will ultimately win over the Wrong. During the course of the battle, Shri Krishna preaches the essence of truth [Baghavad Gita] to Arjuna, the third of the Pandava.
The epic is a collection of about one lakh verses and embraces the whole of our life. Several legends and long discourses on political, social, moral and religious topics are included. The stories of Shakuntala, Damayanti,Bhisma, Karna and Savitri are well said in Mahabharata. The Mahabharata is considered not merely as a literary composition but also a sacred work for the education of all people. The characters of Dharma, Arjuna, Draupadi and Vidura are ideals personified. The most impressive character in Mahabaharata is Shri Krishna. He is the guiding light, philosopher, statesman of all times. On account of the important role played by Krishna, the whole Mahabharata has achieved a great purpose of religious, political and philosophical enlightment. Draupadi is regarded as an ideal of womanhood.
The several kingdoms, fights between the different dynasties, sacrifice like Aswamedha and Rajasuya are very clearly described in Mahabharata. We can also see Shri Krishna’s attempt as its unification of Bharatha is easily seen.
Shri Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita has tried to correlate all the ways of spiritual attainment. The Gita has the solution to the fundamental human problem of conflict and want. By Krishna’s grace Arjuna’s ignorance has gone.
